Lieber Fedor Iwanowitsch!
Es wäre mir sehr angenehm,
einige Tage bei Ihnen in Basel zu verbringen, doch kann ich den Vorschlag der
"Entscheidung", in der Schweiz einen Vortrag zu halten, aus mehreren
Gründen nicht annehmen. Bitte, teilen Sie der Gruppe "Entscheidung"
mit, dass ich mit ihr sympathisiere, für den Vorschlag eines Vortrags zu halten
danke und dies gerne tun möchte, jedoch es nicht kann. Vor allem reisen wir
gegen d[en] 20. Juni zur Kur nach Vichy und zur Erholung bis Ende Juli.
Ausserdem fühle ich mich sehr wenig wohl, mein Kopf ist schwer, oft habe ich
Schwindelanfälle. Der Arzt ratet mir entschieden von Vorträgen ab. Ich bin in
ärztlicher Behandlung. Den Vortrag müsste ich auf deutsch halten, d.h. ihn
schreiben und übersetzen lassen, dies wäre eine grosse Arbeit und würde viel
Zeit nehmen.
Ende Mai erscheint mein neues
Buch "Von der Knechtschaft und Freiheit des Menschen. Versuch einer
personalistischen Philosophie". Letzte Zeit war ich ausschließlich mit der
Korrektur beschäftigt. Das nächste Buch "Put" bringt meinen scharfen
Artikel über die Sache Fedotoffs. Ich bin stets froh, Sie in Paris zu sehen.
Die Weltlage hat sich etwas gebessert.

Dear Fjodor Iwanowitsch!
It would be very pleasant to me to spend some days with you in Basel,
but I cannot accept the suggestion of the "Decision" to give a
lecture in Switzerland by several reasons. Please inform the group
"Decision" that I sympathize with it, that I thank for the suggestion
to give a lecture and would like to do this, but I am not able. First of all –
we will leave to Vichy to take a cure the 20th of June and to undergo a medical
treatment until the end of July. Besides this I feel not very well, my head is
heavy, often I am suffering by swimming of the head. The doctor decidely
dissuades from giving lectures. I am in medical treatment. I would have had to
give the lecture in German, i.e. I would have to write it and I would have to
have it translated, this would be a large effort and would take much time.
My new book "Slavery and Freedom" will be published at the end
of May. (95) Recently I have been occupied exclusively by the corrections. The
next issue of "Put" will publish my sharp article on the matter of
Fedotoff. (96) I am always pleased to see you in Paris. The international
situation has improved.

in 1954. Therefore we can assume the year-date of this letter for 1939. Also
the article in "Put" was published 1939.

Nikolai Berdyaev, London 1960, who states further: "Friends of both
Berdyaev and Put' begged him not to publish this article. They warned
him it would cause withdrawal of most of the magazine’s regular contributors.
Berdyaev was adamant. The journal never recovered from the loss of so many

Lieber Fedor Iwanowitsch!
Ich teile Ihnen unser grosses
Leid mit. Ende September ist Lydia Judifovna gestorben. Sie war 1½ Jahre schwer
krank, jedoch ihr Tod war sehr verklärt. Ich erzähle es Ihnen bei unserem
Wiedersehen.
Ihr Buch habe ich gelesen und
halte es für das beste und nützlichste Buch über Russland. Ich bin stark
übermüdet, besonders die Nerven. Ich fühle mich bedrückt in unserem Hause.
Eugenie Judifovna ist auch nicht wohl. Freunde wollen uns eine Erholungsreise
nach der Schweiz in Berge für die zweite Dezemberhälfte organisieren. Es gibt
das Visa und manches Andere zu organisieren. Dann sehen wir uns wieder.
Das Buch "Die russische
Idee" habe ich nur auf russisch, "Von des Menschen Knechtschaft und
Freiheit" ist auf englisch. Aber ich habe es noch nicht gesehen. Europ.
Literary Bureau in London beschäftigt sich auch mit deutscher Ausgabe meiner
Werke. Ich habe den Bureau an Nova Vita Verlag gewiesen.
Ich hoffe Sie zu sehen.

Dear Fjodor Iwanowitsch!
I communicate you our heavy sorrow. Lydia Judofivna died at the end of
September. She was very ill for one and a half years, but her death was very
transfigured. (97) I shall tell you more at our reunion.
I read your book and I think it is the best and most useful book on
Russia. (98) I am very overtired, particularly with the nerves. I feel
depresssed in our house. Eugenie Judifovna is also indisposed. Friends intend to
organize for us a recreation trip to Switzerland in the mountains for the
second half of December. We have to get the visa and to organize some other
things. Then we will meet again.
The book "The Russian Idea" I have only in Russian. (99)
"Slavery and Freedom" is available in English now [London 1943]. But
I didn’t see it. The European Literary Bureau in London is concerned with
German edition of my works. I referenced the bureau to Nova Vita [Vita Nova]
publishing house. (100)

Christianity and Communism"]. F.Lieb gave his first inaugural lecture as
professor at the University of Bonn/Germany on the theme: "The Position of
the Russian-Orthodox church towards the Revolutionary Government"
